For a different take on the traditional Friendship Star quilt block why not think about this fun version. With just a few added half square triangles, it takes on an entirely different look. I always like a well-known block that has a little twist to it. It adds a little bit of extra interest. Learn how to make a large friendship star ribbon quilt block with this tutorial.

By the way, when I say large, it is very large, 18 1/2″ to be exact. That means that is great on its own, or as part of a large quilt with just a few blocks. Sometimes it is nice to make a quilt that does not have a million pieces in it.

Please read all instructions carefully before beginning. Use a scant 1/4″ seam allowance when sewing this block.

Supplies Needed

Along with the fabric, you will need some general quilting supplies.

• Cutting mat
• 6 1/2″ quilter’s ruler
• Rotary Cutter
• Sewing Supplies

How to Make a Large Friendship Ribbon Quilt Block (18 1/2″)

Fabric Needed:

Background Fabric: Fat eighth, Fabric A: Fat quarter, Fabric B: Fat eighth, Fabric C: 6 ½ inch square

Cutting Instructions:

Background Fabric:

• 2 squares cut 7 ¼ inches by 7 ¼ inches

Fabric A:

• 4 squares cut 7 ¼ inches by 7 ¼ inches

Fabric B:

• 2 squares cut 7 ¼ inches by 7 ¼ inches

Fabric C:

• 1 square cut 6 ½ inches by 6 ½ inches.

Block Assembly:

Make the half square triangles first. Pair up the 7 ¼ inch squares as follows:

• Background Fabric with Fabric A – 2 pairs
• Fabric A with Fabric B – 2 Pairs

Take one of the pairs and draw a diagonal line on the back (wrong) side of the lighter fabric. This will be your sewing guide.

Line up each pair of squares with front (right) sides facing each other. Using a ¼ inch seam allowance, sew along both sides of the drawn diagonal line.

Cut down the center, along the drawn line. You will end up with two blocks that need to be pressed open.

Trim them down to 6 ½ inches square. Repeat with the other pairs. You will end up with 8 half square triangles.

Lay out your blocks as shown and then sew together. Sew the individual rows together first and then join the rows. The block should measure 18 ½ inches.
