How to Make a 6 1/2″ Sawtooth Star Quilt Block

Originally part of my 2020 Sparkling Sampler Mystery Quilt Along, this tutorial shows you how to make the lovely Sawtooth Star quilt block. For the mystery quilt, we made two blocks, so the information listed in this article is for 2 of them. Adjust accordingly, depending on how many blocks you want to make.

As you’ve probably figured out by the photo, the April mystery block instructions are for the popular Sawtooth Star. Can you believe that we are already on the fourth month of this mystery quilt along?

How is everyone progressing? I am seeing some lovely blocks posted on social media. If you are joining in the fun and want to show off your work, you can post your pics to Instagram and use the hashtag #createwithclaudiaqal.

You can also head over to facebook where I have a group dedicated to the quilt along. I’ve been blown away by all of the beautiful blocks people are making.

The fabric I used for this month were all from Moda and include Flowers on Navy from the Sweet Harmony collection by American Jane Fabrics. It also includes Tic Tac Toe in pink from the Best Friends Forever collection by Stacy Iest Hsu, and Kelly Green on White from the Essential Dots collection.

In the video tutorial I used various fabrics from my stash.

If you like to watch video tutorials, I’m doing this quilt along over on YouTube too. Here is April’s block, so join in on the fun there too.

Cutting (For Both Blocks)

  • Eight Squares of Fabric A – 2 inches by 2 inches
  • Two Squares of Fabric A – 4 ¼ inches by 4 ¼ inches
  • Eight Squares of Fabric B – 2 ½ inches by 2 ½ inches
  • Two Squares of Fabric C – 3 ½ inches by 3 ½ inches

April Mystery Block Instructions – Part One

Assemble the flying geese unit (You will need one of the 4 ¼ inch squares and four of the 2 ½ inch squares.)

First – Draw a diagonal line on the back(wrong) side of the four small squares.

Next – Line up one of the small squares on top of the large square with right (front) sides facing. Line up another small square on the opposite corner.

Using a scant ¼ inch seam allowance, sew down each side of the drawn line.

Cut on this drawn line, cutting along the line that was previously drawn. Press open.

Using one of these units, take another one of the 2 ½ inch squares and line it up on the remaining corner (right sides facing).

Using a scant ¼ inch seam, sew along both sides of the drawn line.

Cut along drawn line, press open. You will have two flying geese units.

If needed, trim them down to the size needed: 2 inches by 3 ½ inches.

Repeat all steps to get two more Flying Geese units. You should have four total to make one block.

Block Assembly – Part Two

Lay out your units as shown.

Sew together the left and center units of row one. Repeat with row 2 and 3.

Add the right unit to each row. Finally, sew the rows together, press open and you have your completed block. The blocks should measure 6 ½ inches by 6 ½ inches.

How big will this quilt be finished? What would the fabric yardages be if i wanted to make this into a queen sized quilt? Thanks in advance.
