Woven Fabric Strips Lace Tutorial

I am always trying to think of fun new projects to make with my fabric. This one is a great scrap buster and is easy to make. In this woven fabric strips lace tutorial I’ll be showing you how to turn some of your fabric into something different. You will need a few supplies but you probably have most of them on hand.

I know that many people who come here like to see a tutorial, but many others like to learn by watching videos. For all of you, I have you covered. Here’s my video showing you how to make this lace.

A couple of notes about supplies. 1) If you don’t have a bias tape maker, you can still make the strips. My video shows you how. I also have this article on how to make bias tape without a maker. 2) If you don’t have a wool pressing mat you can use your ironing board. You need a surface to pin the strips to.

Making the Strips

Following the instructions on your bias tape maker, make your strips. I used a size 25 and cut my strips 1 7/8″ x width of fabric. You can make these strips as wide or as narrow as you would like.

I used these gorgeous purple fabrics from “Meadow Hues” my latest signature fabric line from Island Batik.

Once they are pressed, use a scant 1/8 seam allowance along the open side to close the strip so it doesn’t open up. Then it is time to weave your fabric lace.

Weaving the Lace

Lay out your strips horizontally, pinning them into place so they don’t slip. Add the vertical strips, weaving them into the vertical ones. Pin them on both ends as well.

To keep the strips in place when sewing them, place a small drop of glue at each intersection. Let the weaving dry for an hour or more and then it will be ready to sew. I sew down the center of each strip to secure the lace. Once you are finished sewing you are ready to use your lace.

Use it on its own by adding some binding around the edge. It would make a cute little table topper or modern doily. Cut out a shape and use it an embellishment for a quilt project. I made a little heart quilt using my lace. After cutting out the heart shape, I sewed it to a piece of fabric using a raw edge technique. Then I quilted the piece and put binding on it.

This woven fabric strips lace tutorial is a lot of fun to do. It does not take much time, uses up some fabric in your stash, and looks great. I hope you will give it a try!
