How to Make a 6 1/2″ Half Square Triangle Quilt Block

Originally part of my 2020 Sparkling Sampler Mystery Quilt Along, this tutorial shows you how to make the easy Half Square Triangle quilt block. For the mystery quilt, we made eight blocks, so the information listed in this article is for 8 of them. Adjust accordingly, depending on how many blocks you want to make.

It’s time for the February mystery block instructions. This month we are making eight Half Square Triangle blocks. It’s another easy block, so even though you are making a lot of them, they aren’t too hard.

Fabric Requirements

  • Fabric A – 1 Fat Quarter
  • Fabric B – 1 Fat Quarter

For the photos of this month’s block, I used two Moda fabrics that included “Essentially Dots” kelly green on white, and “Sweet Harmony” in yellow apron flower by American Jane. In the video tutorial I used a combination of fabrics I pulled from my stash.

You can find many of the items that I used to make this project in my Amazon Store.

Video Tutorial

Some people prefer to watch video tutorials so I made this one for this months’ block.

February Mystery Block Instructions

Cutting (For All Blocks)

  • Four squares of Fabric A – 7 ¼ inches by 7 ¼ inches
  • Four squares of Fabric B – 7 ¼ inches by 7 ¼ inches

Block Assembly

Draw a diagonal line on the back (wrong) side of the square of fabric A. This will be your sewing guide.

Line up fabric B on top of fabric A with front (right) sides facing each other.

Using a scant ¼ inch seam allowance, sew along both sides of the diagonal line drawn earlier.

Cut down the center, along the drawn line. You end up with two blocks that need to be pressed open.

Trim the blocks down so they measure 6 ½ inches by 6 ½ inches.

Repeat until you have completed eight blocks.

See you next month!

Clue: Next month we will be making friends under a starry sky.
